When your childโs grades are not improving, what do you look at first? ๐ค
A change of academy in elementary school, another in middle school, and another when results begin to waver...
Parents arrive for a new consultation with their child, carrying the same question.
โWill it be different this time?โ
At first, there is hope.
New teachers, new books and a new atmosphere.
You hope your child will change too.
But a few months later, the same worries return. ๐ฎโ๐จ
โWhat did you learn at the academy today?โ
โJust... some problems and whatever the teacher told us to do...โ
The answer is short, and the results on the report are much the same.
Your child attends regularly, but it is hard to tell whether they are making progress.
That concern does not simply mean you are impatient.
It may come from the instincts of a parent who watches their child closely.
We understand that feeling.
With so many academies, why do the same concerns keep returning?
Sajik, Hwamyeong and Haeundae.
Working for many years with students and parents in these education-focused neighbourhoods of Busan, we found that families often changed academies for similar reasons.
โ Worries about results
โก Uncertainty about the learning process
โข A lack of individual attention
These were the three recurring themes.
Grades were not improving; parents did not know what was being taught; and their childโs pace and gaps in understanding were not being taken into account.
They were not simply looking for a โbetter academyโ.
They wanted a place that would understand their child properly.
Two studentsโ stories, leading to the same conclusion
One high school student had changed academies after every exam because their grades were not improving.
They had prepared for English school exams by memorising large amounts of passages and practice materials.
But school exam questions adapt and paraphrase that material, so memorisation alone was not enough. We connected the fundamentals with school exam preparation and repeated review. Then came the next result... ๐ฅ
Their score improved by about 50 points.
Another student, by contrast, was already scoring 90 points in their second year of high school. Why did they come to us? ๐ง
We will share that story in the next post. Stay tuned!
To be continued...
Why we started INNIT
Changing academies alone does not necessarily change a childโs learning.
Even with new books, a new teacher and a new environment,
the same pattern can repeat if the reasons behind their mistakes remain unresolved.
We believe a good lesson is not simply one that covers a lot of material. It identifies what the child needs, checks their understanding and helps them avoid repeating the same mistakes.
Before deciding how much to teach, we first identify gaps in understanding.
We pay attention to the moment a child hesitates.
Is it the concept, reading the question, vocabulary or sentence structure?
The reasons behind mistakes differ from child to child.
So the teaching needs to differ too.
We do not mix elementary students with middle and high school students.
They need different learning paces and amounts of practice. Following the same pace can leave some waiting and others rushing.
We aim to help each child complete the learning they need as fully as possible.
Finish todayโs work today. ๐
This does not mean piling on work. It means understanding, checking and, where necessary, explaining again before moving on.
We believe these are essentials of supporting studentsโ learning. ๐ก
โโโ
When grades stall, the first step need not be finding another academy.
First, understand what your child needs now, and whether their current academy is identifying where they are struggling.
โโโ
A place where you can stop counting how many academies your child has attended.
That is the kind of place we want INNIT to be.
